Our Story
The Story of Preece For more than two decades renowned Central Victorian winery, Mitchelton, has produced the Preece range of wines. The range is named in honour of Colin Preece, a pioneer of the Australian wine industry and Mitchelton’s foundingwinemaker. In 1967, Melbourne entrepreneur Ross Shelmerdine commissioned wine industry stalwart Colin Preece to find the best site for premium wine grape growing anywhere in south eastern Australia. Preece chose an old grazing estate, prized for its climate, soil and proximity to the waterways. Mitchelton Winery Mitchelton’s history can be traced over the decades through the pervasive influence of Victoria’s Goulburn River and the unfolding narrative of its distinctive wines. The river surrounds the vineyard on three sides, shaping the environment and climate of Mitchelton. The result – four starkly different soil profiles running along the rippling ridges and vales of the property. Creating individual vineyards within a vineyard. By working in harmony with the land, the Mitchelton team unlock the best from each block through innovation and attention to detail in the vineyard and the winery. This intimate and focused approach creates wines of distinct personality, finesse and longevity. Visit Mitchelton – the home of Preece wines Team Preece Meet the team behind the wine. Team Preece is led by winemaker Ben Haines and viticulturist John Beresford, working with assistant winemaker’s Dom Valentine and Kate Day. Mitchelton’s team works in harmony with the land to unlock the best from individual blocks. Key to this is innovation and attention to detail in the vineyard and the winery. The team take their wine seriously, but also believe in balance. The Preece range of wines are all about making sure one of life’s great pleasures – enjoying wine – is enhanced by simply great wine made from quality fruit. Without all the fuss.

    Preece Chardonnay

Nigel Buchanan is an artist whose work is widely popular. Warm, modern and lush, his illustration for the Chardonnay was inspired by the intimacy and joy of sharing wine – a true example of the ‘art of living well’.

    Preece Sauvignon Blanc

Tracie Grimwood's work is whimsical with a delicate sense of colour and texture. Her naive view of the Mitchelton vineyard, tower and river with spiralling dragonflies to suggest a light summery feel perfectly match the style and flavours of Sauvignon Blanc.

    Preece Rosé

Christopher Nielsen's images evoke narratives from another era. The Rosé artwork’s simple decorative elements were inspired by the clean, often Asian flavours matched with the wine and its raspberry, strawberries and cream palate.

    Preece Shiraz

Glen Vause is an airbrush illustrator who works now digitally and in oils. Tone and texture – key to a great Shiraz – are also the focal point of his piece showcasing the winery and the vines.

    Preece Cabernet Sauvignon

Stella Danalis is a collage artist from Brisbane. After a hard day with the scissors and glue, she enjoys pouring a glass of fine red and watching the western sky paint its own heavenly canvas. Her piece humourously considers the idea of “big and bold” Cabernet Sauvignon.

    Preece Merlot

Ned Culic's illustratrations have graced everything from billboards to postage stramps. His Merlot artwork is bright, colourful and textured – a piece richly evocative of the wine and its home, the Mitchelton estate.

    Preece Sparkling

Rosanna Vecchio is an award winning Illustrator based in Melbourne. This intuitive, textural and spontaneous artwork makes use of creams, golds and bright hints of colour; it celebrates the very qualities Sparkling is prized for.

The wine has a lovely soft and creamy finish. Best With - a good pasta dish such as pesto linguini with chili and prawns.

    Preece Sauvignon Blanc

You’ll smell the intense tropical fruit aromas of this wine straight away and may even catch a hint of spearmint. A lovely pale yellow colour, it tastes of lots of citrus characters with a dash of tropical fruit flavours to make it interesting. Very refreshing. Best with – grilled whiting with rocket, pear and parmesan salad.

    Preece Rosé

    Preece Sparkling

Preece Sparkling is a blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, the two best varieties for developing fine yet complex fizz. The fruit selected from three different vintages, grown in cooler climates, provides toasty honey aromas and a crisp finish. Best with – celebrating with your family and friends, or to add a touch of bubbly fun with dishes such as natural oysters or sushi.
